Frustration is boiling over across Havering as residents say they have been pushed to breaking point by ongoing delays at Gallows Corner, with many now demanding accountability from Transport for London.

Residents say TfL have still not confirmed an official opening date despite previously saying earlier this year that the major junction works would be completed by the end of April. Confidence has now collapsed, with many accusing authorities of repeatedly shifting deadlines with little clarity or reassurance.

A petition has now been launched calling on the Mayor of London and TfL to take urgent action, and it has already been signed by more than 600 people. The message from the community is clear, residents have had enough.

The petition states that TfL originally confirmed the works would be completed by the end of September 2025. Since then, multiple deadlines have come and gone, with the latest estimate pushed into 2026, leaving residents facing months of continued disruption.

For those living in Havering, the impact has been relentless. Residents describe daily gridlock across the borough, with long queues of traffic becoming the norm rather than the exception. Journeys that once took minutes are now taking significantly longer, affecting work, school runs and daily life.

Children and students have been particularly affected, with many struggling to arrive at school and exams on time due to severe congestion. Concerns have also been raised about air quality, with stationary traffic creating high levels of pollution, especially near schools and residential areas.

Noise pollution has increased, quality of life has dropped, and public transport has also been hit with delays. There are growing fears that emergency services could be delayed in critical situations due to the ongoing traffic chaos.

Road safety is another major concern. Residents report more aggressive driving, dangerous manoeuvres and mounting frustration behind the wheel. Areas such as Ardleigh Green have been heavily impacted, with local roads deteriorating under the pressure of diverted traffic. Potholes are now causing damage to vehicles, adding further financial strain.

Residential streets including Cecil Avenue have become unofficial cut through routes, bringing increased traffic into quiet neighbourhoods. At Gallows Corner itself, drivers have raised concerns about misuse of the yellow box junction, creating imbalances in traffic flow and leaving some routes gridlocked for multiple light cycles.

Local businesses are also feeling the strain. Reduced accessibility, delivery delays and falling footfall are hitting traders hard, with some warning that continued disruption could threaten their future.

The petition also calls for financial compensation for residents, suggesting a partial council tax refund for every month the project runs beyond the original September 2025 deadline. Many feel it is only fair given the scale of disruption they have endured.

Residents are demanding a firm and final completion date, a clear explanation for the delays, immediate improvements to traffic management and regular public updates from TfL.

There is also a call for urgent road repairs and enhanced safety measures, particularly near schools and residential areas where risks are increasing.

While local representatives have raised concerns, residents say stronger action is now needed to hold TfL to account.

Across Havering, the mood is clear. People are fed up of being given dates that come and go with no resolution.

Without urgent action, many fear the situation will only get worse, with growing risks to safety, health and daily life.

For now, one message is being repeated across the borough. Enough is enough.
