Why The Replacement Warley Electricity Substation Could Be Bigger Than The Existing Site
Residents are being invited to help shape proposals for a larger replacement electricity substation beside National Grid’s existing Warley site.
The current substation is on Clay Tye Road near South Ockendon. National Grid says it is approaching the end of its useful life and wants to build its replacement on land immediately to the south.
The proposed site would be larger than the existing facility. National Grid says the additional space is needed to upgrade and reinforce the local electricity network as demand increases.
A public consultation will run from Monday 21 September until Friday 16 October, ahead of a planning application expected to be submitted to Havering Council towards the end of 2026.
Two public drop-in events have been announced. The first will take place at St Mary Magdalene’s Church, North Ockendon, Upminster, on Saturday 26 September from 11.30am to 4.30pm. A second will be held at Bulphan Village Hall on Wednesday 30 September from 1pm to 6pm.
An online information event is also planned for Tuesday 6 October from 5pm to 6pm. Registration is available by emailing warley@nationalgrid.com.
Siôn Davies, External Affairs Manager for National Grid, said: “The existing substation at Warley is reaching the end of its useful life, and so the replacement substation will be an essential part of our work to upgrade and reinforce the electricity network in the area.
“Local views are important to us and will help inform the proposals before a planning application is submitted.”
National Grid says construction could begin in winter 2027, subject to planning consent.
The company will also ask how a proposed community fund should support places affected by the construction work. It says more than £500,000 could be made available for projects delivering social, economic, educational, environmental or conservation benefits.
Residents can read the consultation material at nationalgrid.com/warley, telephone 0800 138 5539 between 9am and 6pm on weekdays, or write to Freepost RTBU-HAYY-LCUX, 7 Bayley Street, London, WC1B 3HB.
