A major £650,000 refurbishment of the gym at Harrow Lodge Leisure Centre has been completed, with the upgraded facility now open to members.

The popular Hornchurch centre has unveiled a fully transformed gym space, featuring state-of-the-art equipment, a redesigned layout and enhanced accessibility for its 6,500-strong membership base.

The investment, delivered in partnership between leisure operator Everyone Active and Havering Council, marks a significant milestone for the centre as it celebrates five years since opening in 2021.

Members can now benefit from a wide range of new Life Fitness cardio, resistance and strength equipment. This includes upgraded treadmills, cross trainers and bikes, alongside expanded strength training provision such as plate-loaded and pin-loaded machines, free weights, squat racks and lifting stations.

The refurbishment has also seen the gym floor reconfigured to improve the flow between training areas and make better use of the available space.

A key feature of the project is its focus on accessibility. New inclusive equipment includes a wheelchair-accessible chest press, seated row and shoulder press, as well as a SkiErg with a wide base and extended handles, a hand bike and additional accessible cable machines.

The design of the new gym was informed by detailed data gathered using TrackMyGym sensor technology, which monitored how equipment was used. This insight, combined with member feedback, helped shape the final layout and equipment mix to better reflect demand.

Alongside the new equipment, the gym has been given a complete visual refresh, with modern flooring, upgraded lighting and a brighter, more contemporary look designed to enhance the workout experience.

Tom Fletcher, Area Contract Manager at Everyone Active, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to welcome members back to a completely transformed gym. This is a huge investment in Harrow Lodge and really takes the facility to the next level.

“We’ve introduced a wider range of equipment and improved the layout to make it easier to use, based on how our members train. The feedback we’ve had so far has been really positive, and we’re looking forward to seeing more people make the most of it.

“If you’ve not visited before or are thinking about joining, come in and take a look at what’s on offer.”

Patrick Odling-Smee, Director of Living Well, Havering Council, said: “The refurbishments at Harrow Lodge Leisure Centre are welcome news for our residents as this investment brings the latest fitness equipment, while also delivering a more accessible, inclusive and future‑proofed space for visitors.

“Since opening five years ago, the centre continues to be a hugely valued community asset and has supported thousands of residents in their journeys to lead healthier and more active lives.

“We hope current and future members enjoy the first‑class facilities on offer for years to come.”

The newly upgraded gym is now fully open and available to members.
