More Than 400 Walkers Raise £37,000 For Saint Francis Hospice
Families and friends filled Raphael Park with memories, music and community spirit in support of local hospice care.
More than 400 people came together for the third Saint Francis Hospice Memory Walk, raising £37,000 so far while remembering loved ones.
The event took place at Raphael Park in Romford on Sunday 6 September, with participants completing either a five-kilometre route or a shorter walk around the park.
Great British Bake Off star and hospice supporter Andy Ryan rang a ceremonial bell to start the walk before the Romford Drum and Trumpet Corps led participants on their way.
Andy said: “It’s such a lovely day to come together, enjoy a walk and think about all of our loved ones. It’s a privilege to be part of such a special event that means so much to so many people.”
The Mayor of Havering, Councillor Maggie Themistocli, attended to support walkers, volunteers and the hospice team.
Wendy Roffe walked with daughter Amy and other family members in memory of her husband, Ray. Their donations for the event reached £1,765, taking the family’s fundraising total beyond £17,000 since Ray died in 2020.
Wendy said: “Another fantastic walk arranged by Saint Francis Hospice which we did in memory of my husband Ray. We will continue to do all we can to support the hospice for everything they have done.”
Charlotte Winder, Events and Community Manager at Saint Francis Hospice, thanked everyone involved, including volunteers, marshals, entertainers, stallholders, supporters and staff.
She said every step would help local people and families who rely on the hospice. The charity provides free palliative and end-of-life care across Havering, Barking and Dagenham, Redbridge, Brentwood and parts of west Essex.
