The Nightmare of Living Near Launders Lane.
For most of us, mornings begin with a coffee and perhaps an open window to let in the fresh air. But for residents living on Launders Lane, life couldn’t be more different. Their first thought each day isn’t about breakfast, it’s about whether they can breathe.
Thick smog outside their homes has become a daily occurrence. Instead of fresh air, residents are often greeted with a grey-black dust coating their windowsills and doorsteps, alongside a stench that makes even the thought of opening a window unbearable.
Sirens and fire engines are a regular feature of life here. For those living near Arnold’s Field, the landfill site at the heart of the issue, the nightmare never seems to end. Firefighters remain stationed nearby as the site continues to smoulder, trying to prevent flare-ups. But residents know the fire burns much deeper—believed to be as far down as the height of two house, sparking back into life time and again.
This summer, residents have even reported loud bangs and sparks shooting from the site, describing it as though fireworks were being set off. But for them, this isn’t a show, it’s a daily threat.
The health implications are deeply concerning. Locals report cases of severe COPD, pneumonia—including double pneumonia—alongside asthma and chronic bronchitis. Many note that their health improves when they leave the area, a worrying indicator that their environment could be a root cause.
One resident explained how even sitting in the garden has become impossible, while others admit they now wear masks inside their own homes. Fruit trees that once produced food are now coated in grey dust, their crops rendered inedible.
This is life for those who live near Arnold’s Field. What should be their homes—a place of safety and peace, has instead become a daily battle for health, comfort, and even basic breathing.
