Two Major Grass Fires Break Out in Romford as Firefighters Battle Blazes Across the Borough

Firefighters have been battling two separate grass fires in Romford this evening, with around 120 firefighters deployed across both incidents as temperatures and dry conditions continue to fuel the risk of fires.

The first fire broke out near Southern Way, where eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were called after the London Fire Brigade received the first of 11 emergency calls at 4.15pm.

Around four acres of grassland were damaged by the fire. Crews from Leytonstone, Wennington, Homerton, Bethnal Green and surrounding fire stations attended the incident, bringing the blaze under control by 5.50pm.

Meanwhile, firefighters are continuing to tackle a second grass fire near Eastern Avenue West.

Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters remain at the scene, with crews from Woodford, Whitechapel, Barking, Euston and surrounding fire stations responding after the first emergency call was received at 5.14pm.

Station Commander Ryan Kerby, who is at the scene, said:

“Firefighters are working tirelessly in arduous conditions to bring the fire under control and protect nearby properties.

“There is significant traffic disruption in the area due to road closures, and we urge people to avoid the area wherever possible.

“The fire is also producing a large amount of smoke. While we appreciate it’s a very hot day, we are asking local residents to keep their windows and doors closed to prevent smoke from entering their homes.”

The causes of both fires are not known at this time.

The incidents come as firefighters continue to deal with an increased number of grass fires during the current spell of hot, dry weather, with residents urged to take extra care to help prevent further outbreaks.

Just walked my dog on our normal route over in Bretons Manor, one local told me that he had seen and heard youths joking about setting the fires and jumping on buses to watch the progress of the fires and the emergency services, if so lets hope none of the firestarters get caught in their own destruction. Thoughts are with all of the emergency services in attendence this evening. Stay safe.
