Could Youths Be Responsible for the Ingrebourne Valley Fires? Residents Call for Action
Residents are demanding action after another major fire broke out in Ingrebourne Valley between Elm Park and Rainham on Saturday, leaving more wildlife habitat destroyed, smoke drifting across Havering and firefighters once again battling a blaze in an area that has been repeatedly affected in recent weeks.
The latest fire broke out in the Ingrebourne Valley, a beautiful stretch of countryside that is home to countless species of wildlife and is regularly enjoyed by walkers, cyclists and families.
As flames took hold, thick smoke billowed into the sky and could be seen from Dagenham and across many parts of Havering, causing concern for residents living nearby.
The fire is one of a number of blazes that have occurred in and around the same area over recent weeks. Residents have questioned why fires appear to be breaking out in similar locations and at similar times.
People who regularly use the park have reported seeing groups of youths in the area during recent weeks. Some residents have also expressed concerns about youths riding electric bikes through the park and have shared their suspicions about how some of the fires may have started.
Frustration among local people is growing.
Residents say they are already living with the ongoing impact of repeated fires and smoke from Launders Lane. They fear these additional fires are placing even more pressure on their community, while further damaging one of Havering’s most important green spaces.
The impact extends far beyond the burnt grassland.
Every fire destroys habitats relied upon by birds, insects and other wildlife. It also requires a significant response from the London Fire Brigade, tying up firefighters and fire engines that could be needed elsewhere during periods of hot weather when emergency services are already under increased pressure.
With the school holidays now underway, many residents say they are worried that further fires could occur unless more is done to protect the area and deter irresponsible behaviour.
Local people are urging anyone who witnesses suspicious activity in or around Ingrebourne Valley to report it to the police immediately. They also hope that increased patrols and swift intervention can help prevent further damage before more of this much-loved landscape is lost.
They say Ingrebourne Valley should be a safe haven for wildlife and a peaceful place for families to enjoy—not a location repeatedly scarred by fire.
