ROMFORD MP CALLS FOR BROWN TOURIST SIGNS TO PUT UPMINSTER WINDMILL ON THE MAP
Romford MP Andrew Rosindell has called for historic brown tourist signs to be installed to direct visitors to Upminster Windmill, praising the volunteers who work tirelessly to preserve one of Havering’s most treasured landmarks.

Mr Rosindell visited the historic windmill on Saturday afternoon during its open day, accompanied by Havering Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Realm, Councillor Martynas Cekavicius.
The MP said the windmill was an important symbol of Havering’s history and praised the Friends of Upminster Windmill for their dedication to protecting the borough’s heritage.
He said: “How fortunate we are to still have one remaining local windmill preserved and so well looked after by the amazing volunteers from the Friends of Upminster Windmill.
“I was pleased to meet them on Saturday and discuss the importance of protecting our local Essex heritage here in Havering. We must cherish what we have left.”
Mr Rosindell pointed out that Romford and Hornchurch once had several windmills, all of which have sadly disappeared, making Upminster Windmill’s survival all the more significant.
He thanked the volunteers and members of the Friends group for their commitment to preserving the historic site for future generations.
The MP is now backing calls for brown tourist signs to help guide visitors to the windmill, arguing that a landmark of such historical importance deserves to be properly signposted.
The windmill also offers visitors the opportunity to explore its visitor centre, gardens and tea room, helping to keep local heritage alive while providing a welcoming destination for residents and visitors alike.
Mr Rosindell encouraged people to visit and support the attraction, highlighting the important role volunteers play in keeping Havering’s history alive.
With growing interest in local history and heritage, supporters believe improved signage could help more people discover Upminster Windmill and appreciate the work involved in preserving this unique piece of the borough’s past.
