‘I Will Always Stand by Working People’: Margaret Mullane Hits Back at Conservatives Over Bin Strike Row

Dagenham and Rainham MP Margaret Mullane has hit back at Havering Conservatives following criticism of her decision to stand alongside striking bin workers at Havering Town Hall last week. Responding to accusations that she had put trade unions before her constituents, Margaret has defended her support for the workers, insisting that she will always stand up for working people facing what she describes as injustice.

Margaret writes: I will always stand up for and stand by working people

I notice that local Conservatives seem to have a problem with me supporting working people, let me make very clear, I will always stand up for and stand by working people facing injustices.

I do have some suggestions for the local Conservatives. Perhaps they should reflect on the decades in which they ran Havering Council into the ground financially, bringing about the budget crisis that it now faces. They should also humbly apologise for doing literally nothing to deal with the health problems for Rainham residents from the smoke pollution at Arnolds Field, Launders. Indeed, they should consider how it was whilst their party ran Havering they didn’t manage to intervene and stop the tens of thousands of tons of waste dumping across Arnolds Field.

But I don’t want those local Conservatives to stop there. They need to explain why their government in 2021 reneged on the promises to residents who bought homes at Beam park to suddenly block the promised station at Beam Park. A block that I am working on to get removed. Maybe they could also shed some light on how it was they slashed our armed forces during their 14 years in power nationally and inflicted austerity across our public services and outsourced and privatised many public services, such as refuse collection.

I note that these Conservatives have a problem with Trade Unions providing funding for the Labour Party. They really should contrast the fact that trade unions democratically decide whether or not to support the Labour Party and that individual trade union members make the decision to make subscriptions with crypto billionaires and other wealthy businesses, with zero accountability, funding parties of the right in the UK.

While we are about it I’m not sure if it has occurred to the local Conservatives but many of the people who collect refuse in Havering happen to live in the borough. So, just to be clear, I will always stand by working people struggling against injustices and am working hard to sort out the problems they left locally at Arnolds Field and at Beam Park.

‘Putting trade unions before constituents’ ?

Do the Tories not realise that many of their constituents who work ARE trade unionists ?
