Havering AC squads take team victories in Essex Cross Country League opener
More than 60 Havering Athletic Club competitors tackled the hilly Hylands Park course as both senior squads claimed team victories in the opening Essex Cross Country League fixture.
There were some great turnouts as the club athletes faced bright but windy conditions in Chelmsford on Saturday 10 October, with Kate O’Neill leading the women home and James Stewart finishing third for the senior men.
Senior Women
The senior women made a brilliant start to the defence of their league title with a fine team win and individual victory for O’Neill, who finished more than a minute ahead of the field.
Robyn Matson’s eighth place was her highest in the league for several years, while Morgan Campbell finished 16th. Under-20 athlete Rosie Warner completed the scoring quartet in 36th.
Senior Men
The senior men also made an excellent start, edging out league champions Southend for the team victory. Stewart’s third place set the scene, with Kieran O’Hara sixth and under-20 Sam Horsley seventh on his senior league debut.
Rob Warner and Chander Dhillon finished 16th and 17th, while Byron Cipa placed 28th to complete the scoring six. Eight more senior club athletes also finished.
Junior Teams
The under-18 men built on their Essex Relays silver medal with a third-place team finish. Aidan Doherty was the first Havering athlete home in seventh, followed by Sean Mugagga in 13th and Joe Sewell in 17th.
The under-16 boys were also third and fielded an impressive 13 competitors, with Callum Millard Jennings and Cruz Carvell highest placed in 14th and 15th.
The under-14 girls finished fourth, led by Darcy Davies in ninth, while the under-18 women placed fifth with Poppy Vines taking third.
There is a quick turnaround before the second league fixture at One Tree Hill on Saturday 24 October.
