Giant ‘Frankenchicken’ Crashes Opening Day of Rainham’s New Pret Cafe
Animal welfare activists target Pret A Manger store opening with gigantic ‘frankenchicken’ as part of £1m chicken welfare campaign.
Yesterday – a car-sized, animatronic Pret wrap with a giant “frankenchicken” stuffed inside greeted customers outside a new Pret store at 23 New Road, Rainham on its opening day. The opening was attended by a local MP, councillors, and several local decision-makers – who were all met by activists calling out Pret’s broken promise to stop selling “frankenchickens”.
Pret is currently facing major backlash after breaking its commitment to stop selling fast-growing chickens – known as “frankenchickens” – by 2026. Animal welfare charity Anima has launched a £1m campaign to hold Pret to account, organising over 80 protests in London, and over 20m social media views.
The campaign has also drawn support from animal welfare campaign Project Slingshot, who are running adverts across more than 200 London Underground stations and 2,200 tube carriages throughout the summer, highlighting the cruel fate of frankenchickens. Anima has run full-page newspaper adverts of its own to take the campaign to the wider public.
Celebrities such as Chris Packham have joined over 75,000 members of the public in pledging to take a break from Pret until they keep their promise to stop selling frankenchickens. He said: “I am absolutely furious at Pret for breaking their promise to chickens. Factory farming has broken the chicken… It’s a horror story dressed up as a lunch menu.”
“The public are shocked when they find out the truth about Pret,” said Connor Jackson, Chief Executive of Anima. “Every single bird they sell is a frankenchicken – bred to grow so fast that they suffer immensely. Customers expect far better, and most can’t believe the promise to stop selling these birds was made eight years ago. Pret can’t keep ignoring tens of thousands of people who’ve pledged to take a break, and the public figures standing with them.”
