‘IT TOOK YEARS OF FIGHTING’- ANDREW ROSINDELL MP HAILS £42M QUEEN’S HOSPITAL A&E VICTORY.

The Member of Parliament for Romford Andrew Rosindell today writes in the Havering Daily on the news that Queen’s Hospital will receive £42million funding to transform its A&E department.

Andrew Rosindell MP spearheading the campaign for a new A&E unit at Queen’s Hospital with former NHS Trust Chief Executive Matthew Trainer, Minister of State Karin Smith MP at the House of Commons last year.

“After many years of campaigning and lobbying every government, the news has finally been announced that Queen’s Hospital in Romford will be allocated the £42 million it desperately needs to transform the Accident and Emergency department. This is a major victory for our local community and will come as a relief to our dedicated NHS staff who have kept services running, despite working in facilities that were not adequate to cope with the pressures the hospital is facing today.

As Romford’s M.P., I have been fighting for this investment for a very long time, working alongside the hospital’s leadership and repeatedly pressing ministers to deliver the funding required. I have raised the scandal of corridor care in the House of Commons numerous times and made direct appeals to both Conservative and Labour governments. Last year, I organised a private meeting with Karin Smith M.P., the Minister of State for Health, in an appeal directly to her to take urgent action to find the money to restructure the Queen’s Hospital A&E. It has taken far too long to make this decision, but I am grateful to her for finally making it happen.

Queen’s Hospital was built in 2006 to serve a much smaller population and to deal with around 325 patients a day. Twenty years later, it regularly faces more than double that demand. The need to modernise its A&E was blindingly obvious. Yet for years, my constituents have too often been treated on trolleys in corridors or made to wait for hours on end to be seen by a doctor. This funding is very welcome, but it should never have taken such a prolonged campaign to secure it.

My heartfelt thanks go to the former Chief Executive of the Barking, Havering and Redbridge Universitiy Hospitals NHS Trust, Matthew Trainer, for spearheading this campaign with me, supported by neighbouring Members of Parliament and also Fiona Wheeler, our current Chief Executive (interim) for finally being able to deliver this much needed investment that will finally turn our A&E into a department we can all be proud of and where our patients are given the care they deserve in a modern, fit-for-purpose environment at Queen’s Hospital.”
