Victory for Queen’s Hospital.

Twenty two months after Margaret Mullane MP, the Labour Member of Parliament for Dagenham and Rainham, launched a high-profile campaign calling on the government to fund an expansion of the Emergency Department at Queen’s Hospital, £42m has been secured to make it a reality.

Originally built to care for 325 patients a day, the hospital now regularly sees double that number presenting at Accident and Emergency. This funding will allow the Trust to fundamentally change and redesign the A&E, improving the patient experience and creating a modern, fit-for-purpose department.

Margaret Mullane told the Havering Daily ; “This is an absolute triumph for local people. I promised back in July 2024 that I would fight tooth and nail to deliver the good quality health care that local people deserved. This announcement comes after months and months of pressure, meetings with Ministers, and of course, the voices of thousands of local people who contributed to my campaign. This is what we can achieve when we work together.”

Dedicated waiting areas, better line of sight to monitor patients, improved ‘flow’ of patients as they move through the department, and more natural light are just a few of the improvements planned. The Children’s A&E is also being transformed to create a better environment for younger patients and their families.

Margaret added: “This investment will make corridor care a thing of the past. Not only is this a resounding win for patients and local people, but it will also vastly improve the working conditions of staff who go above and beyond and have been doing the best they can under difficult circumstances for many years now.

“The new A&E that we have fought so hard for will help restore pride in our health service, giving people the dignity they need when they are at their most vulnerable. The scale of this win cannot be overstated. This is what getting things done looks like.”

In the coming weeks BHRUT will be sharing their detailed plans on how they will deliver a modern, fit-for-purpose Emergency Department for people across Havering and Barking and Dagenham.
