Over 180 Young Performers Set to Shine in Spectacular ‘Wind in the Willows’ at Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch
More than 180 talented young performers from across Havering and beyond are preparing to take to the stage this summer as Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch presents a spectacular new production of The Wind in the Willows.
Running from 30 July to 1 August, the much-loved Kenneth Grahame classic has been given an exciting new twist, with rebellious punk Weasels, plenty of music, laughter and adventure bringing the timeless story to life for audiences of all ages.
Created and performed by members of QYouth, Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch’s renowned youth theatre programme, the ambitious production has been specially adapted by James Watson and Andrew Linham and produced by the theatre’s Communities Team.
Featuring an onstage cast aged between 6 and 18, alongside young people working backstage in technical and production roles, the show offers a unique opportunity for aspiring performers and theatre-makers to gain first-hand experience of creating a professional-scale production.
Audiences can expect to join Toad, Ratty, Mole, Badger and a host of colourful characters as they race along the riverbank in a fun-filled musical adventure packed with boating, fast cars, daring escapes and plenty of surprises. With the Weasels embracing a full punk makeover, the production promises attitude, anarchy and lots of laughter.
QYouth has become one of the cornerstones of Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch’s community programme, providing weekly workshops for young people aged 6 to 18 and helping hundreds of aspiring performers develop confidence, creativity and teamwork both on and off the stage.
James Watson, Director of Communities at Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch, said:
“There’s something very special about seeing so many young people come together to tell a story like The Wind in the Willows. This new production is a bold and joyful celebration of what can be achieved when young people are placed at the heart of theatre-making, shaping the work with imagination, commitment and generosity.
“Bringing together over 180 participants aged 6 to 18, the project showcases the incredible creativity, confidence and talent of young people from across our community. From children making their main stage debut to older members taking on backstage roles and leadership responsibilities, every young person has played an important part in creating something ambitious and truly their own.
“We can’t wait for audiences to see the energy, imagination and sense of community they’ve brought to this production.”
Seventeen-year-old Mel, who plays the role of Chief Weasel, said taking part in the production has been a special experience.
“This will be one of my last shows, and it’s a bit full circle for me. I used to read the book when I was younger and now I get to perform in the show with my friends. I really like the Sunday rehearsals on stage and seeing it all coming together. I think, ‘Wow, it’s actually happening.’
“This show is nothing like any show I’ve seen or been a part of before. It’s helped develop my acting skills and especially learning acting through song, which is a new skill for me. Backstage is so cool, especially the lighting and props. And the team are really inclusive and friendly.”
Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch has built an outstanding reputation for nurturing young talent and producing high-quality theatre for the local community. Each year, more than 106,000 people attend performances at the theatre, while a further 30,700 people take part in its community and participation programmes.
The production runs for approximately 140 minutes, including an interval, and is suitable for audiences of all ages.
Tickets are available now, with families encouraged to book early for what promises to be one of the highlights of the summer theatre season.
