Romford 2, Baldock Town 2

Flynn Hamilton’s late equaliser earned Romford a replay on Tuesday evening against Baldock Town. Hamilton struck in the 87^th minute, taking Ekow Owusu-Boakye’s pass on the edge of the penalty area before turning and striking a shot past the motionless Baldock goalkeeper.

Boro keeper Lamar Johnson was twice called into early action, saving a deflected cross at the foot of a post after five minutes and making another low save after 22 minutes. Between those saves, Freddy Tandon had to head away a shot as Baldock had the better of the opening exchanges.

It was somewhat against the run of play when Romford went ahead after 30 minutes. Jaxon Brown, who had already put one shot wide, latched onto Aron Gordon’s pass and after his first shot was blocked, swivelled to drive home the loose ball.

Romford’s lead lasted just four minutes however, as Ayomide Akinbobola found space in the Romford penalty area and headed home Smith’s cross from the left, and in the last minute of the first period, Akinbobola struck again as he converted a cross from the right to give the visitors a half-time lead.

Romford began to claw their way back into the match after the break and there was a moment of some controversy after 61 minutes when Prince Sikiru’s measured through pass put Matt Price through on goal. Baldock goalkeeper Oluwayomi Olonisakin rushed from his line and brought down the Boro forward some 30 yards from goal, but was spared a red card and shown only a yellow due thanks to the presence of a covering defender. Whether he would have been able to prevent Price from scoring is moot.

Boro sub Fabio Vieira shot wide at one end while Baldock’s Freddie Higgs shot wide at the other and although Baldock continued to look dangerous on the break, Romford were now creating chances. Jaxon Brown forced a save from Olonisakin after Teddy Desmond’s throw had been flicked on with Hamilton unable to get his shot on target from the loose ball.

Hamilton’s goal drew Boro level three minutes from time, although there was still time for further drama as Julius Nwike was sent off in the last minute when he pulled back a Baldock forward and was shown his second yellow card of the afternoon.

Boro have played better this season, and will have to do so again to make progress in Tuesday’s replay.
