Romford Gets a Deep Clean: Town Centre Undergoes Major Freshen-Up.
A deep clean of Romford town centre, including using steam and jet washing, is being carried out by Havering Council.
Together with its street cleaning contractors, FCC, crews have been working from the early hours in the morning to carry out the deep cleaning, making the most of the time when there is less footfall.
The works are part of the Cabinet’s 100 Day plan which includes delivering improvements that residents expect to see, such as cleaner streets and town centres.
The street cleaning teams have been using specialised equipment such as a Gladiator MV7000 which includes a mechanical scrubbing deck and uses steam for deep cleaning large pedestrian spaces, alongside them using jet washers, and other mechanical sweepers.
The machinery enables the crews to get stubborn dirt from the pavements and areas in front and around local businesses, cleansing unsightly graffiti, washing street furniture, and cleaning street signs.
This work will help towards improving the overall appearance and cleanliness of the town centre.
Since this current deep clean started over a week ago, it has covered areas from the top of South Street via Exchange Street and towards Romford Station.
Councillor Martynas Cekavicius, Havering’s Cabinet Member for Public Realm, said:
“As part of our 100 Day plan, we want to deliver improvements that residents expect to see, this includes cleaner streets and town centres.
“Here in Romford, we have started this, with a deep clean of the town centre – areas where we want our local businesses to thrive and where our residents and visitors come to, on a daily basis.
“These deep cleans see us focusing on the places that matter most to residents and our aim is to make a visible difference where it’s needed most.
“We want a cleaner Havering and working with our street cleaning contractors FCC, we are using ways and means of doing this, from using specialised equipment, jet-washing and clearing unsightly graffiti, to give the areas a more welcoming and fresher look.
“This is, of course, is in addition to cracking down on fly-tipping, where we are looking to increase fines to the maximum.
“We won’t tolerate fly-tipping or littering and we ask that residents and visitors help us to keep our streets and town centres cleaner, by putting litter in a bin or taking it with them and to pick up after their dogs
“We as a Council are committed to keeping Havering cleaner, but we can all play a part.”

“The deep clean of the town centre in partnership with Havering Council is a key part of delivering pride for Romford.
“By undertaking this enhanced cleaning programme, we hope to invigorate a sense of ownership encouraging residents and visitors to help keep the streets and town centre clean.”
Further cleaning will also be taking place in and around Romford Market over the coming weeks.
Havering’s Cabinet are also looking at extending the deep clean works for over the coming months in other town centres across the Borough.
