Rubbish crisis erupts at Princes Court as councillor and residents demand action in St Alban’s Ward.
St Alban’s Ward Labour Councillor, Jane Keane is tackling an awful waste management problem. rShe told the Havering Daily: “Last week I was called residents living at a block of residential flats in Princes Road, Princes Court. I had been told by a resident that the domestic waste had not been collected. Other images provided to me by a leaseholder showed that large bulky items had been left outside entrance doors, the bin shed, and a dirty mattress had even been left in the vehicular access. I reported the missed bin collection, requested council street care clean the street, notified the management company – and then because Princes Road was so badly littered, I got out my own litter picker!”
The bins are advertised on site as serving flats 63-77 Princes Court, but there are other flats on site 78-101 which seem to have no designated waste storage. This means many residents are using the bins provided for only 15 flats with obvious consequences. Some of the lobbies are littered and general cleanliness is not what it should be.”
Jane said, “My resident, a leaseholder, is furious because leaseholders receive a charge for clearing up the site, when what is needed is a long-term solution to the problem of waste storage and bulky waste collection.”
In addition to household waste, cooking oil drums and large bags of rice have been seen amongst the domestic waste. Jane said, “I have queried with the management company whether a kitchen is being used by a resident as a commercial kitchen.”
Last year Jane exchanged correspondence with one of the managing agents and the Council about the bin capacity for the flat’s waste. Jane was initially hopeful that the managing agent, by working together with the Council’s Waste Team, would be able to provide a long-term solution to the issue of bin capacity.
She continued: “That has not happened. Over and above the service charge applied to leaseholders at these flats, my leaseholder tells me that leaseholders are exposed to additional charges on a repeat basis for what is a failure of responsible authorities to perform one of the most basic local government functions, the effective management of waste, promotion of public health and prevention of nuisance and littering in residential roads.”
Jane added “I have asked the Council and the Company to produce a permanent solution to management of waste on site. This only became an issue in the last year, something on site changed for the worse. This needs to be addressed by parties who have a real commitment to finding a permanent solution.”
Councillor Jane Keane with the rubbish left.
