Andrew Rosindell MP Renews Opposition To Assisted Dying Ahead Of Parliamentary Debate.
The Romford MP says better palliative care should be the priority as a new bill prepares for its second reading.
Romford MP Andrew Rosindell has renewed his opposition to assisted dying, saying Parliament should instead focus on palliative care, pain management and properly funded hospices.
His statement comes before the second reading of a new Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, which is scheduled in the House of Commons for Friday 11 September.
An earlier bill with the same name completed its Commons stages and was examined by the House of Lords, but made no further progress when the 2024–26 parliamentary session ended. The new Private Member’s Bill was introduced in June 2026.
Mr Rosindell said: “I continue to oppose the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. My position on this issue has been consistent for many years.”
He argued that vulnerable people should be protected and cited Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying system. Health Canada reported that 16,499 people received MAID in 2024, representing 5.1 per cent of deaths in the country.
The Reform UK MP also highlighted the financial pressure facing Saint Francis Hospice, which supports people across Havering and neighbouring boroughs.
Mr Rosindell added: “Instead of making assisted dying the answer to suffering, the Government should ensure that every terminally ill person has access to high-quality palliative care, pain management, dignity and compassionate support.”
Supporters of assisted dying argue that tightly controlled legislation would give terminally ill adults greater choice while including safeguards. Opponents raise concerns about coercion, mistakes and the effect on vulnerable patients.
