Nine-Year-Old Sophia’s Design Is Coming To Life On The Queen’s Theatre Stage This Christmas
A rainbow-coloured costume complete with peacock feathers and an archery-target headdress will be made for this year’s Robin Hood pantomime.
Nine-year-old Sophia has won Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch’s Design a Dame competition, with her colourful creation set to be professionally made and worn on stage in this year’s Robin Hood pantomime.
Over the summer, local children were challenged to design the spectacular finale costume for larger-than-life character Nanny Molly Coddle.
Sophia’s winning design features an archery-target headdress, peacock feathers and an outrageous rainbow of colours.
As well as seeing her creation brought to life on the Queen’s Theatre stage, Sophia has won a behind-the-scenes theatre experience, four tickets to press night and a festive pantomime goodie bag.
Director Kash Arshad said:
“It was so much fun going through all the brilliant, sparkly, glittery submissions for our Design a Dame competition. The imagination and creativity of the young people of Hornchurch is just amazing.
“This has been one of my favourite parts of the process of bringing Robin Hood to life. To see this kind of direct engagement with the young people who are not only our next generation of designers, artists and creatives, but audiences too, is really inspiring.”
Robin Hood runs at Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch from 18 November until 2 January, with a local twist on the classic tale set in the Forest of Havering.
The production is written by Kate Lovell and James Watson, with original music and lyrics by Andrew Linham and direction by Kash Arshad.
The cast includes Folarin Akinmade as Robin Hood, Tom Vercnocke as the Sheriff of Havering, Verity Bajoria as Maid Marian and Killian Macardle as Nanny Molly Coddle.
Performances include captioned, BSL interpreted, audio described, dementia-friendly and relaxed SEN-friendly dates. Full listings and booking information are available from the Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch website.
