NewHenry Nowak: How Many More Families Must Be Broken Before Knife Crime Is Treated As A National Emergency?

The death of Henry Nowak was utterly horrific.

Endless words have been written about the appalling death of this 21-year-old young man. It should never have happened. Henry had his whole life ahead of him. He should still be here today.

His father, Mark Nowak, gave one of the most dignified interviews imaginable under such truly awful circumstances. Even in the depths of unimaginable grief, he found time to thank the police officers who supported his family in the aftermath of their son’s death.

The family have now called for knife crime to be treated as a national emergency.

Sadly, they join an endless list of families whose lives have been destroyed by the loss of a son or daughter to knife crime. Parents have begged, pleaded and campaigned for action for years. They have attended rallies, spoken to politicians, worked with charities and shared their heartbreak publicly in the hope that no other family would endure the same pain.

Yet the killings continue.

The reality is that many people now feel little is changing. Every time another young person loses their life, there are promises, statements and expressions of sympathy. Then the headlines fade and the next family finds itself living a nightmare no parent should ever experience.

Knife crime must be tackled. That has been said countless times by grieving families, community leaders and campaigners. Yet many would argue that it is still not being treated with the urgency it deserves.

When it comes to Henry’s case, there is another issue that cannot simply be ignored.

The actions of the officers who attended the call rightly deserve to be fully investigated. Not just investigated, but thoroughly scrutinised. The circumstances surrounding this case are so shocking that there must be a complete and transparent examination of what happened.

That is why the ongoing Independent Office for Police Conduct investigation is so important.

This is a truly horrific case and one that must never be repeated.

Henry’s family will live with the knowledge of the circumstances surrounding their son’s death for the rest of their lives. The pain and trauma caused by this tragedy cannot be measured.

What also needs to be established is why events unfolded in the manner they did. Questions have been raised publicly and it is essential that those questions receive answers through a thorough and independent investigation.

This young man was just 21 years old.

Many people have described the circumstances of this incident as shocking and incomprehensible. It has left communities asking how such a tragedy could occur and whether lessons can be learned to prevent anything similar from ever happening again.

Mark Nowak has shown remarkable dignity throughout this ordeal. Despite his family’s unimaginable loss, he still thanked the officers who supported them during their darkest moments.

That level of grace is extraordinary.

But his family’s call must not be ignored.

Address knife crime now.

Not next year. Not after another review. Not after another grieving family stands before television cameras asking why their child is no longer here.

Because if history is anything to go by, many fear that once the headlines move on, knife crime will once again be pushed aside until the next tragedy occurs.

Henry Nowak should still be here.

Our thoughts remain with his family, friends and all those who loved him.

Rest in peace, Henry.
