Havering Residents Share Powerful Stories Of Hope In New Suicide Prevention Film
A new short film sharing the lived experiences of Havering residents affected by suicide will be launched in Romford on World Suicide Prevention Day.
Stories of Hope aims to encourage open conversations, challenge stigma and show that support and recovery are possible.
The film was produced in partnership with Havering Adult College and will be screened at Lumiere Cinema in the Mercury Mall on Thursday 10 September.
Free public sessions will take place from 2pm to 5pm and from 5pm to 6.30pm. Places are limited and must be booked in advance through Eventbrite.
The project forms part of Havering Council’s five-year suicide prevention strategy for 2025 to 2030. The strategy focuses on identifying people at greater risk, reducing stigma and improving the support available to people affected or bereaved by suicide.
Council figures state that Havering recorded an average of 19 deaths by suicide each year over the decade examined, approximately one death every three weeks. These figures describe an average across several years and do not predict what will happen in any individual year.
Councillor Graham Day, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Adults, said: “Death by suicide can be prevented and we want residents to know help and support is available.
“By sharing these stories, we hope to encourage open conversations and reduce stigma. If this film encourages just one person to seek help, or one friend, family member or colleague to start a conversation, it will have made a difference.”
Residents can book the afternoon screening or the early-evening screening online.
