A Havering mother is calling for the banning of all e-bikes in parks and the introduction of stricter laws following the horrific hit and run of her six-year-old son.

Albie was knocked to the ground and then run over, leaving him with head injuries and broken bones. His mum Amy has spoken exclusively to the Havering Daily.

“On Thursday, Albie was playing with his friends in Rise Park as he often does. As he went to leave the park, two e-bikes came past at a very fast speed on the pedestrian pavement where Albie was walking. The first one knocked him down and the second ran him over. Albie fell to the floor where he sustained head injuries and injuries to his leg.”

Ambulance crews arrived within minutes and Albie was rushed to the Major Trauma Unit at Queen’s Hospital.

“I was on my way back and my partner called me to get there as quickly as possible. The trauma unit were fantastic and immediately put Albie in a neck brace and began working on him. He had multiple X-rays which showed breaks to both the tibia and fibula, and he had his head glued back together after sustaining a large gash when he hit the pavement.”

Both parents were left in complete shock after the incident.

“The police came to the hospital and we passed on all the information. Three witnesses came forward from different parts of Rise Park who had seen what happened. We gave their details to the police.”

However, the family say they have been left disappointed with what followed.

“We did not hear anything more until a man came round on Monday. He told us they hoped to investigate but that it is very difficult to track down youths on bikes wearing balaclavas, and that if the case had to be closed they would let us know. I asked about the witnesses and he said he could perhaps contact them. It really felt like the case was over before it had even begun.”

The impact on the family has been devastating. Albie’s friends who witnessed the incident have also been left shaken after seeing him lying injured on the ground in a pool of blood.

“We are lucky that Albie has not suffered life changing injuries. He will be in a wheelchair for the next three months and is having ongoing treatment to reset his leg after the breaks. But if this had been an elderly person, they might not have recovered,” Amy said.

Urgent Witness Appeal-Can you help?

Following this incident, the Havering Daily is supporting Amy and her family in appealing for information. Anyone who lives or works near Tay Way, close to the Rise Park exit by the tennis courts, is urged to check doorbell or CCTV footage from around 4.40pm on the day of the incident-Thursday 30 April.

Were you in the park at the time. Do you have footage that could help identify those responsible.

If there are not enough police officers to investigate or limited resources to progress the case, this is a moment for the community to come together and help. The suspects are described as two male youths wearing all black with balaclavas.

Amy added, “These bikes must be banned from parks. Laws have to change. My son suffered injuries that thankfully are not life threatening, but if this had been an elderly person they may not have survived. They were riding at speed on a pedestrian path. These bikes must be taxed and insured or more people will be hurt.”

The appeal now is simple. Please check your doorbell cameras and local CCTV. Albie is just six years old. He and his family are in shock. The community can help make a difference.
