A Transfer Window Like No Other: Jasper’s Football Round-Up
Hornchurch sit fourth in their first National League season as record spending and early Premier League surprises dominate Jasper’s latest football round-up.

Hello everyone, long time no see. A lot has happened over the summer in the world of football. In fact, I haven’t seen a transfer window quite like it.
Hornchurch off to a great start in the National League
Hornchurch fans should be happy after the Urchins made a strong start to their first-ever National League season, including long-distance trips to Barrow and Carlisle.
Despite losing their most recent match 1–0 at home to Forest Green Rovers, Hornchurch are fourth in the table and firmly in the play-off places after six games.
Back-to-back promotions could be on the horizon, although the club would need to ensure its stadium meets the relevant EFL requirements if it were to reach League Two. It is very early, but the signs are positive. Come on you Urchins!
The transfer window slams shut
It was another extraordinary transfer window, with Premier League clubs spending approximately £3.49 billion and breaking the competition’s summer record for the second year running.
Anthony Gordon’s move from Newcastle United to Barcelona was one of the first major deals. I have a lot of praise for Gordon, but such a substantial fee shows just how inflated the transfer market has become.
The Gordon deal does not seem quite as startling when Nicolas Jackson’s move to Aston Villa is considered, while Tottenham Hotspur paid up to £100 million for Sandro Tonali.
Deadline day then brought Enzo Fernández’s move from Chelsea to Manchester City for £125 million, equalling the British transfer record. It is the second time Fernández has commanded a fee of more than £100 million.
Four players moved to Premier League clubs for fees exceeding £100 million during the summer, underlining just how remarkable the window became.
Premier League round-up
We are now three games into the Premier League season. Here are my thoughts following gameweek three.
Manchester City, the league’s biggest spenders during the 2026 window, and Arsenal lead the way with perfect records. Arsenal’s latest victory came against Chelsea, who had also been unbeaten since the start of the season.
Newly promoted Hull City are third. Yes, the league is being “mauled by the Tigers”, apart from Aston Villa, who held them to a draw.
Many doubted a Hull side that only just reached the Championship play-offs before winning promotion, but they are proving those doubters wrong. Their biggest statement came on the opening weekend when they beat Manchester United 2–0.
Elsewhere, a new-look Newcastle United have made a solid start and currently sit seventh. The Geordies drew with Liverpool, won away at Tottenham Hotspur and then drew against Bournemouth. They may feel they could have collected more points, but the important thing for Newcastle supporters is that Sunderland remain below them for now.
Another result worth mentioning was Brighton and Hove Albion’s emphatic 4–0 opening-weekend win over a much-changed Aston Villa side.
Tottenham have rebuilt their squad, spending more than £300 million on ten new players, including loans and three free transfers. The early signs have not been encouraging. Spurs collected their first point in a goalless draw at Nottingham Forest but are still waiting for their first league goal.
Fun fact
Newcastle have won more matches at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium than Tottenham have during 2026, even though it is Spurs’ home ground.
