Another familiar name is set to disappear from Romford as the Liberty Bell Beefeater prepares to close its doors next week.

Residents in Romford will soon say goodbye to a restaurant that has been part of the local landscape for more than three decades.

The Liberty Bell Beefeater at Mercury Gardens has confirmed that it will close to the public on Thursday 10 September 2026.

The restaurant, which originally opened in 1995, has been a familiar sight alongside the Premier Inn and close to Romford town centre for more than 30 years. Beefeater describes the Liberty Bell as a family-friendly restaurant specialising in steaks and traditional pub food.

The closure forms part of a wider restructuring by Beefeater owner Whitbread, which has announced changes to its branded restaurant business across the UK.

A letter to Beefeater Rewards Club members confirmed that the UK Beefeater restaurants affected by the changes will close on 10 September. Reports have indicated that the restructuring could affect thousands of jobs nationally, although Whitbread has said it expects to retain a significant proportion of affected employees through redeployment, subject to consultation.

For Romford, however, the announcement means the loss of another familiar venue.

The Liberty Bell has occupied its position at Mercury Gardens since 1995. Over the years it has undergone changes, including its move from the Table Table brand to Beefeater, while continuing to operate alongside the Premier Inn.

The closure does not mean the Premier Inn itself is closing.

Beefeater has confirmed that after the restaurant closes, Premier Inn guests will continue to have access to breakfast, evening meals and drinks during their stay.

The news will nevertheless be significant for local residents who have used the restaurant over the years, whether for family meals, Sunday lunches, birthdays, celebrations or simply a meal close to the town centre.

The closure also comes at a time when Romford’s hospitality and retail landscape continues to change, with residents seeing a number of familiar businesses disappear while new ones emerge.

Whatever the reasons behind the wider restructuring, the closure of the Liberty Bell marks the end of an era for a venue that has been part of Romford for more than 30 years.
