The Untold Story Of Uzbekistan’s Fashion Rebirth Is Coming To London
A young British filmmaker’s debut documentary will take London audiences inside the people, magazines and modelling agencies that helped Uzbekistan create a new visual identity after independence.
A New Look: Uzbek Fashion Following Independence, directed by Dan Akhm, will receive what organisers describe as its first private, non-festival screening in London on Thursday 10 September 2026.
The short documentary uses archive footage from the 1990s to explore the emergence of Uzbekistan’s fashion industry after the country gained independence in 1991. It looks at the first private fashion magazines and modelling agencies, alongside the designers and other figures who helped shape the country’s developing style.
The film has previously appeared at festivals in the UK and Kazakhstan. Its Uzbek premiere took place in Tashkent on 2 September, bringing the documentary’s account of the country’s post-independence fashion scene to a home audience before its return to London.
The screening will be held at the Yunus Emre Institute London, 10 Maple Street, London, W1T 5HA, beginning at 5pm.

The event offers London viewers an opportunity to see rarely shown archival material while learning how fashion, media and individual creativity became part of Uzbekistan’s changing cultural identity during the first years of independence.
