‘Rainham has been plagued for ten years with air borne pollution’-Margaret Mullane.
Today, Labour Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Dagenham and Rainham, Margaret Mullane writes in the Havering Daily in response to an article by Havering’s Leader of the Opposition Councillor Keith Prince in regards to Launders Lane and on the ongoing crisis.
“I read Keith Prince’s statement in The Havering Daily on the ongoing fires at Arnolds Field, Launders Lane. For pure brass neck it gets top marks, though I doubt the long suffering residents of Rainham will be in any way impressed. He criticises the newly elected administration at Havering Council for “dragging its feet” in tackling the underground fires that have plagued the Rainham area with air borne pollution for 10 years. Years in which the Tory Party, of which Cllr Prince has been a leading member, was in control of Havering Council and did exactly nothing to even try to get to grips with the issue.
Perhaps he might recall that Jon Cruddas the Labour Member of Parliament for the area was urging in repeated emails over 5 years for Havering to tackle the public health threat and was being ignored by his Tory controlled Council.
To its credit, the new non Tory administration at the Council immediately took up Jon’s request and is seeking to get on top of the problem. I want the matter dealt with as quickly as possible to stop the fires, perhaps if the Tory Council had shown any level of urgency over 10 wasted years people in Rainham would not be experiencing the COPD and other respiratory diseases that so many now suffer.
I also note that neither Cllr Prince nor any of his Party colleagues on Havering Council have been at the extremely well attended residents’ meetings, if he had he would know that what local residents want is as quick a solution to this issue as possible and certainly not trying to blame those who are seeking to work for that resolution. ”
