‘THE BRITISH PEOPLE VOTED TO LEAVE’: ANDREW ROSINDELL HITS OUT AS EU DEBATE RETURNS
Romford MP Andrew Rosindell has hit back at the renewed debate over Britain’s relationship with the European Union, declaring that “the British people voted to leave the EU a decade ago” and accusing Labour of refusing to accept the result of the referendum.
The comments come as the future of Britain’s relationship with the EU has once again become a major political talking point.
Rosindell, who is Chairman of Havering Vote Leave, has made his position clear and warned against any move towards Britain returning to a political union with the EU.
He said:
“The British people voted to leave the EU a decade ago, and Labour still refuses to accept that result.
“Sadiq Khan should stick to fixing London’s soaring crime rates and failing public services instead of trying to overturn the biggest democratic vote in a generation.
“Only Reform UK will deliver the Brexit people voted for and stop the political establishment from dragging Britain back into a political union which the British people voted to leave!”
Rosindell’s intervention comes as the question of Britain’s long-term relationship with Europe has returned to the political spotlight.
The debate has intensified following comments from Prime Minister Andy Burnham about Britain’s future relationship with European partners.
Burnham has said he intends to set out different options for Britain’s long-term relationship with Europe and seek consensus around one, while also describing Brexit as having done “more harm than good”.
When subsequently questioned about whether rejoining the EU could be an option, Burnham did not rule it out.
That has opened up a fresh political debate over just how far Britain should move towards the EU.
Rosindell, however, is making clear that he believes the referendum result must be respected.
His intervention also directly targets London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who Rosindell accuses of focusing on the wrong priorities for London.
The Romford MP says the focus should instead be on issues including crime and public services.
His comments come from his position as Chairman of Havering Vote Leave, the campaign group associated with his continued opposition to Britain returning to the European Union.
The 2016 referendum saw voters across the UK decide whether the country should remain a member of the European Union or leave.
The result was 51.9 per cent for Leave and 48.1 per cent for Remain.
Britain subsequently left the European Union on 31 January 2020, with the transition period ending at the close of 2020.
Now, almost a decade after the referendum, the question of Britain’s future relationship with Europe is once again being debated at Westminster.
For Rosindell, there should be no question of reversing the decision.
And his message is unequivocal: the referendum result should remain the starting point for any discussion about Britain’s future relationship with the EU.
