‘Council Decision To Scrap Marsh Way Scheme Is a Retrograde Step’ Hits Out Dagenham and Rainham MP.

Margaret Mullane MP-the Member of Parliament for Dagenham and Rainham has commented on Havering Council’s decision on proposed works to improve traffic safety at the New Road Marsh Way junction in Rainham and the cancelling of the safe cycling route.

Confirmation that improvements to the traffic signals at the A1306 New Road and Marsh Way junction are going ahead are welcomed as this junction had seen a number of serious vehicle accidents. However, the Council’s decision to cancel the separate active-travel scheme across the Marsh Way railway flyoveris a retrograde step.

Margaret told the Havering Daily:  “The immediate priority has always been improving safety at the junction of Marsh Way and New Road, the deaths of cyclists in the area and the absence of safe, continuous cycling provision cannot simply be ignored.

I am disappointed that Havering Council has decided to not proceed with the safe cycling route, that was to be funded by Transport for London with no cost to Havering. Discouraging people from cycling at this location because of justified safety concerns is wrong and the proposed scheme would have addressed the problem.

I will be working with Beam Park Ward Councillors, Matt Stanton and Trevor Mckeever to pursue further discussion with Council highways officers, Transport for London, cycling representatives and local businesses about finding a solution to achieve cycling safety and access to employment.”
