“If you are living here, have pride in where you live and stop dumping your rubbish everywhere.“

Hornchurch residents have hit out at what they describe as a shocking lack of respect for their town, after rubbish was dumped across the town centre, with photographs taken by The Havering Daily and residents showing bags of waste, including old clothes, left strewn across the streets and even dumped on the Theatre Green.

Residents who take pride in where they live say they are fed up with seeing people treating Hornchurch as though it is somewhere they can simply dump their rubbish and walk away.

And for those who regularly see the mess, enough is enough.

Old clothes have been dumped across the Theatre Green, despite a clothes recycling bin being nearby.

Rather than putting the clothing into the designated recycling facility literally a few metres from here, bags have instead been left on the ground, with their contents scattered across the area.

Other fly-tipping has also been reported at the rear of Hornchurch Town Centre.

Residents say the problem is particularly frustrating because efforts are being made to keep the area clean.

The council is working to clean streets and maintain public areas, yet residents argue that all that work can quickly be undone when people decide to dump their rubbish instead of disposing of it properly.

There is also anger over reports of people arriving in vans and leaving unwanted items behind.

For residents, the issue is not simply about rubbish.

It is about respect.

Respect for the town.

Respect for the people who live there.

And respect for the workers who have to come along afterwards and clear up somebody else’s mess.

One resident told The Havering Daily that people who are proud of Hornchurch are becoming increasingly frustrated at seeing rubbish dumped in areas they use every day.

The Theatre Green should be somewhere residents can enjoy, not somewhere they have to walk past piles of discarded clothing and rubbish.

And when a recycling bin is available just a short distance away, residents are asking a very simple question.

Why leave it on the floor?

Fly-tipping is not a victimless act.

It makes an area look neglected, creates additional work for council crews and leaves residents feeling that the place they are proud to call home is being disrespected.

Residents are now calling for people to take responsibility for their own rubbish.

If you bring it with you, dispose of it properly.

If you no longer want something, find the appropriate place to recycle or dispose of it.

And if a recycling bin is provided, use it.

Hornchurch residents should not have to look out of their windows or walk through their town centre and see other people’s rubbish scattered across the streets.

The council can clean the streets.

But residents are asking whether it is time for those dumping the rubbish to show some responsibility too.

Because no matter how many times the streets are cleaned, the problem will continue if people simply keep treating Hornchurch as their personal dumping ground.
