Bedfords Park was transformed into a celebration of wildlife on Saturday 30 May as families from across Havering gathered to enjoy Deer Day, a special event dedicated to one of the borough’s most treasured residents.

Set against the stunning backdrop of Bedfords Park, visitors enjoyed breathtaking views and a day packed with activities designed to showcase the beauty and importance of Havering’s deer population.

Members of Harold Hill Deer Aid were on hand throughout the day, including animal rescuers Jan and Shantel, who staffed an information stand offering advice and guidance on deer welfare and what to do if residents encounter injured wildlife.

The event also highlighted the important role deer play within Havering’s natural environment and the need for residents to value and respect the borough’s wildlife.

The Visitor Centre, run by Verity, proved a popular attraction with visitors. Stocked with everything from cuddly toy animals and gifts to vegan beauty products, it also offered a selection of delicious teas and cakes for those looking to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Visitors were able to learn more about deer through fascinating displays of antlers, discovering the differences between species and gaining a greater understanding of these magnificent animals.

A special photographic exhibition featuring the winning images from the Essex Wildlife Trust competition also attracted plenty of attention, showcasing some of the county’s most spectacular wildlife photography.

One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity for families to get up close to the deer. Under the supervision of Park Ranger Dan, visitors were able to enter the deer enclosure and feed the animals, creating memories that will undoubtedly last a lifetime.

Among those attending was Havering’s newly appointed Wildlife Champion, Councillor Kevin Ayres, who joined residents in celebrating the borough’s rich natural heritage.

The event was a wonderful reminder of just how fortunate Havering is to have such incredible wildlife on its doorstep. Deer Day provided residents with a unique opportunity to connect with nature, learn more about local conservation efforts and appreciate the remarkable animals that call Bedfords Park home.

It was a truly memorable day that demonstrated why Havering’s wildlife should be cherished, protected and respected for generations to come.
