Could You Help Bring Some Christmas Comfort To A Hospital Patient This Year?
Local knitters and crocheters are being asked to help bring some comfort and festive cheer to patients spending Christmas in hospital by creating special handmade Christmas lap blankets.
The Knit and Crochet Appeals Need You “Supporting BHRUT Hospital Trust” Facebook group is currently running an appeal for knitted or crocheted blankets for patients staying in hospitals run by Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust over the Christmas period.
Each blanket should measure 20 inches by 20 inches and organisers are asking that they are made in Christmas colours only.
Knitters and crocheters are encouraged to create their own designs, making each blanket individual, or use suitable online patterns for a 20-inch by 20-inch blanket.
Completed blankets must arrive by 1 November 2026. This will give the Trust time to distribute the donations between the different departments and plan for them to be given to patients over Christmas.
There are important instructions for anyone wishing to donate.
Hand-delivered blankets must only be taken to Queen’s Hospital in Romford.

Donors should also place their name and either an email address or home address inside the package, allowing a thank-you to be sent to them.
Anyone delivering their donation in person should report to the main reception desk on the ground floor, opposite Costa Coffee. Staff will arrange for the donation to be passed to Deborah Edwards.
Blankets can also be posted to the same address, again clearly marked for Deborah Edwards, Head of Patient Experience (Lap Blanket), with the donor’s name and contact details included inside.
Organisers have thanked local residents for the generosity they continue to show towards their appeals.
Every handmade blanket donated will have a simple but important purpose: bringing some additional warmth, comfort and Christmas cheer to a patient spending the festive period in hospital.
