Members of the Elm Park Royal British Legion gathered on Sunday 17 May for a proud and moving ceremony to witness the blessing and dedication of the branch’s new Union Standard.

The special service saw the new standard carried to the altar by Mick Webb, accompanied by Brian Vallis, before being received and blessed by Rev Amanda Keighley, President of the Elm Park Royal British Legion.

The ceremony marked an important moment for the branch and the wider armed forces community, with members, supporters and residents joining together in a show of respect, remembrance and unity.

Councillor Barry Mugglestone, Chairman of the Elm Park Royal British Legion and Havering’s Armed Forces Champion, spoke about the significance of the occasion.

“The service is a formal ceremony held to consecrate and dedicate new Union Standards used by branches of the Legion,” he said.

“During the service, the Union Standard was blessed and formally dedicated to symbolise respect, unity, and the Legion’s commitment to serving the armed forces community.

“The standard is an important ceremonial symbol in parades, memorials, and other Legion events, representing loyalty to the Crown, country, and those who have served in the British military.”

The Royal British Legion, founded in 1921, continues to provide vital support to veterans, serving members of the armed forces and their families across the country.

Following the service, members of the congregation gathered together for refreshments kindly provided by St Nicholas Church.

Thanks were also extended to Rev Amanda Keighley, members of the Elm Park Royal British Legion branch and everyone who attended the special occasion.
