A tiny fox cub was heard crying out by a resident whose garden backs onto the stream, sparking a rescue effort that may have saved its life.

Thanks to Shantel, Declan from Harold Hill Deer Aid and a local resident’s quick thinking and kindness in raising the alarm, the cub was found and rescued just in time. Tragically, it was too late for four other cubs discovered at the same location, leaving rescuers and residents devastated.

There are now serious concerns surrounding the circumstances of how the cubs ended up where they were found, with foul play not being ruled out.

Rescuers have praised the member of the public who spoke up, saying without that intervention the surviving cub would not have stood a chance.

Well done to Shantel and Declan from Harold Hill Deer Aid who stepped in to help in this distressing situation.

Residents are being reminded that under UK law it is illegal to disturb or block a fox den when cubs are present, and any actions that cause unnecessary suffering to wild mammals are criminal offences. Further guidance from the Met Police is expected to be shared.

The surviving cub is now receiving specialist care at South Essex Wildlife Hospital, where staff are doing everything they can to help it recover.

Good luck little foxy, the community is rooting for you.
