Residents across Havering are raising increasing concerns about road safety as several locations continue to see a high number of collisions, near misses and ongoing risks to both drivers and pedestrians.

While no single junction is officially ranked as the most dangerous, data, local reports and resident experiences all point to a number of key hotspots where accidents occur more frequently than elsewhere.

Gallows Corner in Romford is widely regarded as one of the borough’s most collision-heavy junctions. As a major roundabout connecting several busy routes including the A12 and A127, it experiences high traffic volumes daily. The complexity of the layout, combined with congestion and driver error, has contributed to a significant number of accidents over the years. Transport for London has previously carried out improvement works here in an effort to reduce collisions, highlighting the long standing concerns around this location.

In Rainham, the junction of Rainham Marsh Way and New Road has become a growing focus of concern. Residents regularly describe it as an accident hotspot, with reports of frequent crashes and near misses. A key issue appears to be confusion around vehicles turning right, with some drivers wrongly assuming they have priority when facing a green light. This misunderstanding has led to multiple incidents, with locals claiming collisions can occur as often as weekly. With further housing developments in the area increasing traffic levels, fears are mounting that the risks will only escalate without intervention.

The wider A1306 corridor, which runs through Rainham, has also been repeatedly highlighted for safety concerns. As a busy arterial road, it sees a mix of local and through traffic, often at higher speeds. This combination can create dangerous conditions, particularly at junctions and crossing points.

Havering Road in Collier Row is another area that has seen a concerning number of collisions in recent years. Reports indicate dozens of accidents over a relatively short period, including serious incidents. Speeding and heavy traffic flow are often cited by residents as contributing factors, alongside concerns about pedestrian safety.

Mawney Road, also in Romford, has similarly been flagged as a problem area. Residents have raised repeated concerns about dangerous driving, speeding and collisions, particularly in residential stretches where vehicles travel too fast for the conditions.

Across the borough, a number of common themes emerge. High traffic volumes, speeding, unclear road layouts and driver confusion all play a role in increasing the likelihood of collisions. In some cases, residents feel that road designs have not kept pace with growing populations and increased vehicle use.

There is also a strong sense from communities that more preventative action is needed. Calls for clearer road markings, improved signage, better traffic light sequencing and additional safety measures such as crossings and speed controls are becoming more frequent.

As Havering continues to grow, particularly with new housing developments bringing more vehicles onto the roads, the pressure on already busy junctions is only set to increase. Without targeted improvements, many fear that these collision hotspots will continue to pose a serious risk to public safety.

The issue is not just about statistics but about the real life impact on residents who use these roads every day. For many, the concern is simple. Without action, it is only a matter of time before more serious incidents occur.
