Havering heads to the polls but who will take control of the borough?
Havering is set to head to the polls on May 7 in what is shaping up to be one of the most unpredictable local elections the borough has ever seen. With no clear frontrunner emerging, attention is now turning to what the political landscape could look like from May 8 and who will ultimately take control.
Questions remain over whether Havering will see a new administration take charge, or whether a coalition, widely predicted by some, will be formed to govern the borough. With the political battleground now firmly established, the race for leadership is well underway.
At the heart of the election are the issues residents say matter most. Overdevelopment continues to dominate local debate, with many voicing frustration at what they describe as the steady erosion of the borough’s character. Concerns are frequently raised about the increasing number of developments and the impact on infrastructure, with some residents claiming Havering is at risk of becoming a “concrete jungle”.
Crime is another key concern for voters. Reports of anti social behaviour remain a visible issue in parts of the borough, and residents are calling for stronger action to improve safety in their communities.
However, questions remain over how much influence a local authority can realistically have on some of these challenges. Housing targets are set by the Mayor of London and central Government, limiting the council’s control over development numbers. Similarly, police numbers and wider resourcing are determined at a national level, raising debate over where responsibility truly lies.
Alongside these concerns, the continued rise in council tax is also weighing on residents, many of whom feel they are paying more while seeing little improvement in services. The future of Havering’s greenbelt is another growing issue, with fears that protected land could be lost to development.
As frustration grows among sections of the community, there is a clear sense that voters are looking for change, though what form that change will take remains uncertain.
With polling day fast approaching, the question now is whether Havering will see a shift in political direction or a continuation of the current balance of power. What is certain is that residents will play the decisive role in shaping the borough’s future.
