“This is my story — one of survival, betrayal, and the long journey toward becoming whole. It is not written to excuse or justify the actions of others, but to speak honestly about the reality of living through abuse and the strength it takes to move forward.”

Legacy is the debut memoir from local author Tami Byron. It is a raw, courageous and deeply personal account of surviving domestic abuse and reclaiming identity after years of silence, fear and emotional isolation.

In Legacy, Tami traces her journey from an innocent girlhood into a life shaped by control and coercion, and ultimately towards a place of self-recognition and quiet strength. The book does not offer a romanticised ending, but instead reflects the reality many survivors face, that healing is not a single moment, but a long and complex process.

The title Legacy was chosen deliberately. Inspired by the women in her family and the strength passed down through generations, Tami wrote the book to give voice to those still living in silence and to remind survivors that their stories matter.

Domestic abuse can affect anyone and can include physical, emotional and psychological abuse, as well as coercive control within relationships and families. As Tami explains:

“This is not just my story. It’s a voice for those who have fought to be seen, to be heard, and to be valued — fully and without apology.”

Tami now takes a strong personal interest in raising awareness around the prevention of Violence Against Women and Girls, using her lived experience to encourage understanding, conversation and access to support.

Jane Keane, a local councillor and community advocate, said:

“I have had the privilege of meeting many survivors of domestic abuse during my time in public service. I am very pleased to support Tami — a courageous woman who has shared her story with honesty and purpose.

The Council’s website, www.havering.gov.uk/DomesticViolenceAndAbuse, offers vital information and support for anyone experiencing abuse. As Tami’s story shows, no one is alone, and there is always hope for a safer future.”
