On Monday 21st October Havering Fabian Society celebrated it’s 50th Anniversary with a dinner at “Stay Restaurant” in Emerson Park. The Society was formed in 1974 by a quartet of activists : Dr.Bill Baker, Basil Newton, John Scott and Alan Thake. The latter served for decades as its Honorary Secretary.

Current long serving holder of this office is well known local conservationist David Marshall. Over 50 years the Society welcomed a host of big name guest speakers and ignited discussions and debates on a wide variety of topics at their many Open Meetings.

The Society’s long serving Chairman, former MP and now Havering Labour Group Leader Councillor Keith Darvill, introduced the after-dinner guest speaker.  For this occasion former Havering resident and member of the European Parliament for London East (1984-1999) Carole Tongue, was the speaker.  In her address she praised the Society, specifically mentioning the late Alan Thake.
