Havering Council have admitted that there has been a technical error with the council’s data system that saw two entire car parks handed parking fines despite residents having paid to park.

On Friday 19 April, a council owned car park in Collier Row saw a parking warden ticket every vehicle in the car park with angry residents showing the warden that they had clearly paid. The warden once again stated ‘he didn’t care’ and that residents had to appeal.

Last week, a car park in Billet Lane was also ticketed despite residents there having paid as they watched a performance at the Queen’s Theatre.

There have also been numerous other incidents across the borough of residents paying to park and having then been issued with parking charges.

Andrew, from Romford, was given a parking ticket even though he had paid and told the Havering Daily:”Not only are residents angry, they are fed up with the very rude attitude these wardens have. They clearly don’t care and just tell everyone to appeal even though they have seen that people have paid.

“What other job allows people to be so rude and abrupt when they know they are in the wrong? Surely they could realise that there was a fault when an entire car park shows as not having paid? You would understand several vehicles, but an entire car park? Come on.”

Andrew also worries that not everyone will appeal and some will pay the fine despite having paid to park.

“Not everyone will go through the appeal process as so many think it is pointless appealing as they don’t even get looked at. More money will be made from us, us who are paying for the shortfalls in the council’s budget.”

A spokesperson for Havering Council told the Havering Daily:

“We are aware of instances where customers have paid for parking sessions but have been issued with parking tickets . This was due to a technical error with our data systems which has now been resolved.

“Customers are advised to appeal against the tickets if they feel it has been issued incorrectly. The information on how to do this is included on the reverse of the ticket.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused to our residents.”

Perhaps the spokesperson for Havering Council would also like to inform the Councillor in charge of parking to instruct the Parking Department to then instruct their Parking Officers to exercise the plainly obvious common sense that should have prevailed on this occasion, if another similar situation occurs. Unfortunately, this is not going to happen as there are/will be to may who will pay the ‘fine’. Money, money, money makes the Council go round. Problem, it may make the Councillors go round in the next elections… to the job centre.
