A terrorist attack in London yesterday has sent shockwaves through communities, with many in the Jewish community once again rightly left feeling fearful and targeted.

This was not just another incident. It has been labelled a terrorist attack and is being widely seen as an act driven by hatred. For many Jewish people, it reinforces a reality they have been warning about for years.

Here in Havering, we have a Jewish community that is proud, active, and deeply rooted in supporting others. Today, that community needs support in return.

Antisemitism has become increasingly visible, particularly on social media where some of the comments being shared are nothing short of appalling. What was once whispered is now being said openly.

Jewish families are being forced to live with fear in a city that is meant to be safe for everyone.

Havering knows what true community looks like. Rabbi Lee Sunderland embodied that. He was respected and loved by all faiths and worked tirelessly to bring people together. His legacy is one of peace, unity, and standing firmly against hatred.

Everything he stood for is the opposite of what we are now seeing.

So why is antisemitism not always called out with the same urgency as other forms of racism. That must change. Hatred in any form must be challenged equally and without hesitation.

Synagogues and Jewish community spaces continue to require high levels of protection. That alone tells its own story. Behind that security are families who simply want to live their lives without fear.

Many are now asking where the support was when it was most needed. Too often, the Jewish community feels left to stand alone.

Havering must be clear. We stand with our Jewish community. We reject antisemitism in all its forms.

This is not just about one incident. It is about the kind of society we are prepared to accept.

And this must never be accepted.
