This year marks the centenary of St Joseph’s Church in Upminster. To celebrate this important landmark, the church is holding a special festival in Upminster Park on Sunday 23 April.

One hundred years ago a new church was opened for the growing number of Catholics in Upminster, dedicated to St Joseph and located on Sunnyside Gardens. The church moved to its present site on Champion Road in the 1930s, and the site of the old church is now occupied by the Upminster Taproom.

The centrepiece of this special festival is a concert by the renowned Brentwood School Big Band. The Band, which has toured nationally and internationally, includes a handful of Upminster residents and members of St Joseph’s parish. In recent years members of the band have played in national and county youth ensembles and a few have secured places at prestigious conservatoires. The programme will include a range of music from classic swing and big band numbers to arrangements of more contemporary music – it is sure to be a treat, and it is open to all with no cost.

In addition, there will be a beer and tea tent, with a selection of real ales and other drinks offered by the Upminster Taproom, and cream teas by the Sweet Rose Cakery – two local business with connections to the parish. To make this a real family afternoon out, there will also be a couple of bouncy castles for different ages.

Hopefully the weather will allow for the event to be held outside, but if not, then provisions have been made to hold the concert in the New Windmill Hall, with the same refreshments on offer.

Fr Matthew, parish priest since September, told the Havering Daily:“This is a great opportunity for us, not just to celebrate and give thanks for the past 100 year, but also to look forward to the future and remind people we are part of the Upminster community. I hope to see lots of people from our Parish and further afield having a good time in the park on the 23rd and celebrating 100 years of St Joseph’s Upminster.”
