Havering Council has paid a tuneful tribute to the borough’s “heroes” in a new video released today on social media.
The video uses a cover version of David Bowie’s Heroes – specially recorded by staff and students of the Havering Music School Community Orchestra – to say thank you to health, care, council and ‘blue light’ workers as well as the neighbours, businesses and charities going the extra mile for one another.
The cover, performed by over 50 people ranging from ages 8-82, also highlights the ‘keep calm and carry on’ spirit being channelled in the borough, from people sewing scrubs for hospital workers to creating protective face shields in schools.
Councillor Damian White, Leader of Havering Council said:
“This is our small way of thanking everyone in the borough who has made a personal contribution in this mighty effort against coronavirus. Our health and care workers are making supreme sacrifices every day but I think we can look back on the last six weeks and be immensely proud of the whole borough. You have all been Havering Heroes.”
“As we commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day, this video shows that the values and actions of our communities today are as united, as caring and as spirited as they were in wartime.”
“These are the values that will guide us on the road ahead and although the science tells us we may be past the coronavirus peak, we know there is a long, long way to go before we are anywhere near a new normal. But for today we want to stop and pause and say ‘thank you’ to all our Havering Heroes.”
A crowdfund has been set up to enable residents and businesses, whose financial circumstances allow, to pledge funds to help voluntary and community agencies deliver much needed support in the borough. Donations can be made here.
Havering Music School are also raising money to assist students who may not be able to afford to learn an instrument once the crisis is over. Visit their JustGiving page here.
