Free Youth Spaces Expand Across Havering – Here’s Where Young People Can Go
Weekly sessions in Romford and Harold Hill will offer activities, trusted youth workers and one-to-one mentoring support.
More free youth spaces are being made available across Havering, with weekly sessions in Romford and Harold Hill.
Youth Unity CIC says the sessions are open to young people aged ten and over and will include gaming, music and DJing, sport, boxing, table tennis, chess and podcasting.
The organisation will run a mobile media van and detached youth work team in South Street, Romford, on Tuesdays from 3.30pm to 6pm.
Thursday sessions will take place at MyPlace Youth Club in Harold Hill, RM3 9EN, from 4pm to 6pm. The Battis, beside the railway arches near Romford station, will host sessions on Thursdays and Fridays from 3.30pm to 6pm.
Registration is required for the dedicated youth spaces at MyPlace and The Battis. Young people can also register for updates about the South Street sessions.
Shirley Jackson, of Youth Unity, said: “We want young people in Havering to know there are places they can go where they will be welcomed, listened to and supported.
“The activities are important because they give young people a reason to come along, but our work is about much more than that. It is about building trusted relationships.
“We are very proud to be increasing the opportunities available to young people across Havering and, importantly, all of these sessions are completely free.”
Youth Unity also accepts referrals for one-to-one mentoring for people aged 14 to 25. The organisation says its mentors can support young people experiencing difficulty at school or college, disengagement, low confidence, risky behaviour, exploitation concerns or relationship problems.
Ms Jackson added: “Early intervention is at the heart of what we do. We don’t want to wait until a young person reaches crisis point before support becomes available.
“Our mentors work alongside young people, helping them understand what is going on in their lives, recognise their strengths and make achievable changes.”
Youth Unity says the expansion is supported by the Metropolitan Police, the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime, Havering Council and the London Community Foundation.
