From Rainham to World Champion: Will Ospreay Makes Wrestling History at Wembley
Rainham’s Will Ospreay has made professional wrestling history after defeating Kenny Omega at Wembley Stadium to become AEW World Champion for the first time.
Ospreay defeated reigning champion Omega in the main event of AEW All In: London on Sunday 30 August, completing a remarkable journey from his roots in Rainham to the top of one of the world’s biggest professional wrestling promotions.
The victory also has a strong connection to Havering’s local political community. Will is the son of Cllr Sue Ospreay, making his achievement a particularly proud moment for his family and those locally who have followed his career.
The eagerly anticipated championship match lasted almost 35 minutes, with both wrestlers pushing each other to their limits before Ospreay finally hit Omega with his Hidden Blade finishing move and secured the three-count.
The victory sparked huge celebrations inside Wembley Stadium as Ospreay was presented with the AEW World Championship and celebrated in front of the British crowd.
It was a history-making result.
Ospreay became the first British-born male wrestler to win a world championship in the United Kingdom. He is also the 11th AEW World Champion and the first holder of the title born outside North America.
It was not Ospreay’s first championship success at Wembley. In 2024, he defeated MJF at All In to win the AEW International Championship. He has now gone considerably further, leaving Wembley with AEW’s biggest prize.
The victory comes after years of building an international reputation, with Ospreay competing around the world before joining AEW and establishing himself as one of the promotion’s leading stars.
Ahead of Sunday’s match, Ospreay spoke publicly about what his journey through British wrestling meant to him and the importance of performing in front of his family, friends and home-country supporters.
Now, the wrestler from Rainham can return home able to call himself AEW World Champion and of course the much loved son of one of the borough’s favourite community champion and very much loved ladies-Sue Ospreay.
