Eight Fire Engines Tackle Large Grass Fire in Hornchurch
Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters are currently tackling a significant grass fire near South End Road in Hornchurch.
Approximately six hectares of grassland are alight, with crews from Dagenham, Hornchurch, Wennington and surrounding fire stations working to contain the blaze.
Firefighters are using a range of specialist wildfire equipment, including backpack blowers, which operate in a similar way to leaf blowers. The equipment enables crews to push flames back into already burnt areas, providing a faster and more efficient method of tackling wildfires.
Crews are also using wildfire beaters—long-handled tools fitted with a flat rubber end—which are used to beat the flames, depriving the fire of oxygen while helping to cool it down.
The London Fire Brigade’s Control Officers received the first of seven emergency calls at 1.18pm, prompting the large-scale response.
The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
Residents are advised to avoid the area where possible to allow emergency services to continue their work safely. Further updates are expected as the incident progresses.
