Another Fire at Ingrebourne Hill: Residents Ask, ‘Why Does This Keep Happening?’
Another grass fire was reported at Ingrebourne Hill yesterday, adding to growing concerns over the number of fires affecting Havering’s green spaces in recent weeks. With firefighters repeatedly being called to tackle blazes across the borough, residents are now urging anyone who witnesses suspicious behaviour near parks, grassland or woodland to report it to the police immediately.
The latest incident is one of many in the recent weeks at Ingrebourne Hill, between Rainham and Elm Park, and follows a series of other grass and open land fires reported across Havering over the past two weeks.
Residents say they have become increasingly concerned by the frequency of the incidents, with several fires occurring at similar locations and around similar times of day. The cause of each fire will be a matter for the relevant authorities to investigate.
The repeated incidents are placing additional pressure on the London Fire Brigade, with firefighters responding to grass fires on an almost daily basis during the recent spell of hot and dry weather.
Every fire engine committed to tackling a grass fire is one that is temporarily unavailable to respond to other emergencies, while crews continue working tirelessly to protect both people and property.
The environmental impact is also significant.
Each fire destroys valuable habitats, damaging grassland and vegetation and threatening the wildlife that depends on these open spaces. Birds, insects, reptiles and small mammals are all vulnerable when fires spread rapidly through dry vegetation.
Residents living near the affected areas say they are regularly seeing smoke drifting across their neighbourhoods and are concerned about the effect repeated fires are having on both the local environment and their quality of life.
The Havering Daily contacted Forestry England for comment regarding the recent fires but had not received a response at the time of publication.
Residents are being encouraged to remain vigilant and, if they witness suspicious behaviour or see anyone acting in a way that causes concern near open spaces, to report it to the police as soon as possible.
As temperatures remain high, authorities continue to remind the public to take extra care in the countryside and local parks to help reduce the risk of further fires.
