Video: 1am Grass Fire Wakes Hornchurch Residents as Questions Are Raised Over How It Started
Residents living near Newmarket Way in Hornchurch were woken in the early hours of this morning after a grass fire broke out close to the Ingrebourne River. The blaze, which was reported at around 1am, prompted a swift response from the London Fire Brigade, with one resident describing being awakened by the sound of crackling before spotting flames outside.
The fire occurred on the grass verge behind Newmarket Way, close to the banks of the Ingrebourne River.
One resident, who witnessed the incident, told The Havering Daily:
“I heard the crackling noise of the fire and then saw the flames. I called the fire brigade and they arrived within minutes, luckily, and put the fire out.”
The resident also questioned how the fire may have started.
“How does a fire start at 1am in the morning on its own like that? Something isn’t right.”
The cause of the fire has not been confirmed and it will be a matter for the relevant authorities to determine if an investigation is required.
The incident comes as Havering has experienced a number of grass and open land fires in recent weeks, placing increasing pressure on firefighters during the current spell of hot, dry weather.
Residents have expressed growing concern about the impact these fires are having on local green spaces, wildlife and nearby communities.
