NewNew Youth Hub Opens in Romford Offering Safe Space, Activities and Positive Opportunities for Young People.

A new youth hub in the heart of Romford is providing young people with a safe, welcoming space every Friday afternoon, offering free activities, trusted adult support and opportunities to build confidence, skills and friendships.  The sessions are funded by Metropolitan Police for the next 12 months to run every Friday afternoon.

The Battis Youth Hub, delivered by Youth Unity CIC, takes place every Friday from 3.30pm to 6.30pm in the railway arches next to Romford Station and the former ATIK nightclub site.

Designed for young people aged 11 and above, the project offers a range of free activities including gaming, music production, podcasting, boxing, table tennis, basketball, chess and creative workshops. Young people can simply turn up, meet new people and take part in activities in a safe and supportive environment.

Youth Unity Founder and Managing Director Shirley Jackson said:

“We know that many young people are looking for somewhere safe to go after school where they can relax, have fun and speak to trusted adults if they need support. The Battis is about creating a positive space where young people feel welcomed, valued and listened to.”

The project has already begun building a regular group of attendees and has seen particularly strong engagement from young women, leading to the launch of a new monthly Girls’ Safe Space session.

The Girls’ Safe Space will take place on the last Friday of every month and will provide young women with an opportunity to discuss issues that matter to them, including community safety, relationships, confidence and wellbeing. The sessions will also support young people to develop their own projects and ideas to create positive change within their communities.

Alongside weekly youth club activities, the hub will host themed sessions throughout the year including DJ workshops, podcasting projects, chess nights and sporting activities linked to major events such as the upcoming World Cup.

The project has been developed in partnership with local organisations and community partners who share a commitment to creating positive opportunities for young people and reducing the risks associated with boredom, isolation and anti-social behaviour.

Shirley Jackson added:

“We want young people to help shape what happens here. The Battis belongs to them and we want it to become a place where young people can develop skills, build confidence, make friends and have their voices heard.”

The Battis Youth Hub is free to attend, however registration is required.
