As temperatures begin to rise across Havering, residents living near Launders Lane in Rainham say they are once again bracing themselves for another summer of smoke, fires and disruption.

Yesterday afternoon, thick smoke was once again seen billowing from the controversial landfill site as firefighters rushed to the scene to tackle yet another fire.

For many local residents, the sight has become an all too familiar part of summer.

People living nearby say they expected the site to ignite again as soon as the warmer weather arrived.

Last year alone, London Fire Brigade crews attended multiple significant fires at the Launders Lane landfill site, with some incidents requiring up to ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters to bring under control. Since 2018, firefighters have reportedly dealt with nearly 200 fires linked to the site.

Smoke drifting across homes and gardens has become a regular concern for families living nearby, with residents repeatedly forced to shut windows and remain indoors during major incidents.

London Fire Brigade has frequently issued warnings to residents to keep doors and windows closed due to smoke travel during previous fires at the site.

Firefighters were once again quick to respond yesterday.

Residents say seeing fire engines stationed along New Road near the site has become commonplace during the warmer months.

However, this year residents are hoping things may finally begin to change.

Tonight marks the first Full Council meeting under Havering’s new administration, where Councillor Keith Prince will officially become Leader of Havering Council.

Speaking exclusively to the Havering Daily, Councillor Prince said one of his key priorities will be taking immediate action regarding Launders Lane and working towards a resolution for residents who have lived with the issue for years.

Local people say they are encouraged by the new administration’s commitment and hope long-awaited action will finally follow after more than a decade of frustration.

Many residents believe they have waited far too long for meaningful progress, with endless meetings and discussions failing to bring a permanent solution.

The Launders Lane site has become nationally known due to repeated underground fires and smoke pollution, with some campaigners and residents referring to it as the “Rainham Volcano.”

Concerns over air quality and health impacts have continued to grow in recent years, particularly during periods of hot weather when fires are more likely to break out.

Now, as another summer begins, residents say they simply want clean air, safety for their families and decisive action at long last.
