A number of long established businesses operating from industrial units in Rainham say they are facing an uncertain future after being given only two months to leave.

Nine businesses based on the New Road Industrial Estate claim they have received short notice periods to vacate units where some companies have operated for more than 20 years.

Business owners say they have not been offered compensation and are now struggling to find suitable alternative industrial premises within the local area.

Many say the situation is placing huge pressure on small and medium sized companies that have spent years contributing to the local economy through employment, business rates and taxes.

One affected business owner told the Havering Daily:

“We have been given just two months to move. This is not fair. There are nine businesses here. Some have been here for 20 years and others for ten years.

“We understand we may have to move, but to give us such little time is unacceptable.”

The business owner also claimed there had been difficulties communicating with representatives connected to the site.

“We have tried emailing and phoning to ask for more time but we have had no response.

“We all know we may eventually have to leave, but at least give us fair time to do it properly. The deadlines are approaching and we are desperately trying to find new premises, but it is not easy.”

Affected businesses say suitable industrial units for trade based companies are increasingly difficult to secure, with many available sites either too expensive, too large or unsuitable for their operations.

Some owners fear they may not be able to continue trading if alternative premises cannot be found quickly enough.

Dagenham and Rainham MP Margaret Mullane told the Havering Daily:

“I am extremely concerned to hear the impact this situation is having on local businesses and the people they employ. These companies have supported the local economy for many years and it is important that meaningful communication and reasonable engagement takes place during what is clearly a very difficult period for those affected.”

Business owners say they had hoped for greater flexibility and communication given the disruption facing multiple firms and employees.

The situation has also reignited wider concerns about the lack of affordable commercial and industrial space for smaller businesses across Havering and East London.

My children have done work experience at ZS Motors from Dagenham Park Church School. What a shame.

2 months notice is a very short time! Council should provide some industrial units suitable to rent for small businesses like these. Corporations are taking over UK’s economy, becoming too difficult to run small buisness nowadays.
