Beam Park Station: Claims Don’t Add Up
Councillor Graham Williamson, Cabinet Member for Development and Regeneration, shares his concerns below about recent claims surrounding the funding and progress of Beam Park station.
Recent statements from Margaret Mullane MP and local councillors suggest that Beam Park station has been given the “green light” and that funding is secured.
However, based on the official information available, I do not believe this reflects the full picture.
While it is true that the Department for Transport has lifted its previous objections, which is a welcome step forward, both government announcements and media coverage make clear that a key issue remains unresolved.
The original confirmed funding of £35 million, agreed in 2020, is still in place. But due to the time that has passed and rising construction costs, there is now a funding shortfall that must be addressed before the project can move forward.
From what has been publicly stated, the Greater London Authority is continuing to explore options to close this gap, including potential national funding and investment schemes.
Crucially, this indicates that a full funding package is not yet in place.
In my view, this directly contradicts claims that funding has been “secured.” The reality is that the project cannot proceed to construction until this financial shortfall is resolved.
Even the recent announcement linked to the Department for Transport decision acknowledged that addressing the funding gap is essential to the station’s future.
Beam Park station is an important project for our community, and any progress should be welcomed. However, it is equally important that residents are given a clear and accurate understanding of where things currently stand.
At this stage, progress has been made, but the project is not fully funded and is not yet scheduled for construction.
Until the funding gap is closed, the future of Beam Park station remains uncertain.
